Pleural mesothelioma is a very aggressive type of cancer that develops in the pleura or the lining of the lungs. This type of cancer is the one that affects more people each year, of the 3,000 cases in the United States, about 2,250 are of pleural type.
Most cases are caused by pleural mesothelioma some kind of asbestos exposure. When a person inhales asbestos fibers long, they can become trapped in the membrane that protects the lungs. Once they are trapped, it is extremely difficult for the body to get rid of them.
Over the years, inflamed tissues go through the process of irritation and scarring. genetic damage and cell mutations may also occur, and healthy mesothelial cells become cancer cells. The vast majority of patients do not know they are being affected by this disease until it is too late for them, because symptoms can take between 20 and 50 years to develop.
